Before Pop Art was a label, Thiebaud was already painting the everyday pleasures of American life — diner counters, gumball machines, lemon meringue pies — and treating them with the seriousness of great modern painting. Thick paint, glowing color, sharp shadows. Familiar things, seen slowly. This exhibition at Courtauld Gallery (@courtauld) is the first-ever museum show of Thiebaud’s work in the UK, bringing together an array of works from major US collections.
