This capture shows what appears to be an asteroid (or meteoroid) hitting the Moon surface. Such impacts happen often because the Moon has no atmosphere to burn up incoming space rocks. When a space rock strikes the Moon, it can create a brief flash of light or a small dust plume. Scientists monitor these impacts to study lunar craters and space debris.
