As the ranch continued to grow, the herd was improved by introducing Hereford and polled Aberdeen Angus. The Rito Blanco division bred the Angus, while the Escarbada, Spring Lake, and Yellow House divisions bred the Herefords.

XIT COWBOYSXIT reached its peak in 1888 with 150 cowboys who rode 1,000 horses and branded 35,000 calves in one year. The ranch maintained grounds in the Panhandle, the northern plains near South Dakota, and later, in 1889, on a range north of Miles City, Montana. For eleven years, 12,500 cattle were driven and fattened for the Chicago markets. In 1889, a program of breeding and herd improvement was launched with the introduction of Hereford, shorthorn, and Aberdeen-Angus cattle to the XIT.
