Sailor Art Thomas was born on this day in 1924. A former military man, Thomas began his wrestling career and is considered by many historians to be the first African-American world champion, having won the WWA World Title in 1972. He captured titles wherever he went, including the Detroit version of the NWA Tag Team Championships alongside Bobo Brazil. Thomas retired in 1981 and died in 2003 as the result of cancer in 2003 at the age of 79. He was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame
