AD. This week, I headed to Haddon Hall in Derbyshire to see a new exhibition all about early modern magic. For me, the most exciting things on display were the house's abundant and varied collection of so-called ritual protection marks. From hexafoils to burn marks, each gives a tantalising glimpse of the fears and hopes of Haddon's inhabitants, high and low, over the centuries.
