More than 100 firefighters battled two blazes on the slopes of South Africa's Table Mountain on Wednesday, and national parks authorities said they were starting to bring them under control after the fires threatened to move toward nearby Cape Town.

Multiple iconic hiking trails on South Africa’s Table Mountain have been closed after a ferocious wildfire. The blaze began in the early hours of Sunday morning and soon spread below the Maclear's Beacon section.

Cape Town firefighters were contending with two fires on Tuesday afternoon in Table Mountain National Park amid strong winds.

A fierce blaze hit Table Mountain National Park, affecting Newlands and Kirstenbosch. Helicopters and firefighters rushed to control the fire.

All available resources had been deployed to contain the fire, South African National Parks, which oversees the mountain and the surrounding reserve, said.
