PHILADELPHIA (AP) — As trash and tempers heat up across Philadelphia on Day 8 of a strike by blue-collar city workers Tuesday, some residents and small business owners are hiring pop-up hauling services to clear their blocks of garbage, even as they broadly support the union’s quest for higher pay.
When over 200 city workers were laid off in September 1938, city workers called a weeklong sanitation strike. Street battles raged in West Philadelphia when strikers blocked police-escorted trash wagons that were aiming to collect trash with workers hired to replace the strikers.
Regular trash pickup will resume in the City of Philadelphia on Monday. Trash pickup was just one of several city services affected by the eight-day strike. Union members were told by DC 33 leadership that they need to return to work as soon as possible. Maintenance staff at city pools are back at work, but the water has yet to return.
