An earthquake shook parts of West Texas Friday afternoon with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was recorded about 16 miles southwest of Ackerly, which is roughly 60 miles northwest of Midland and 320 miles west of Dallas.

Several areas around Midland reported feeling the earthquake, as did some parts of Southern New Mexico, including Roswell, Carlsbad and Alamogordo.
