Voters in states across the country head to the ballot box in the first election since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.
Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat and former Virginia congresswoman, has for months been favored over her Republican opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, the current lieutenant governor. But a texting scandal involving the Democratic candidate for attorney general has added a degree of unpredictability in the race’s final weeks.
Elections in New Jersey, Virginia, California and elsewhere are the first big opportunity since Trump's 2024 victory to gauge voter sentiment.
Voters in the state will elect a new governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. All 100 House of Delegates seats are also on the ballot.
Results timing: In 2024, 87 percent of votes were reported by midnight on election night, and 96 percent were reported by noon the next day. A small share of voters cast ballots by mail, which must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within three days.
Over 1.4 million early votes were cast in Virginia as of Nov. 2, which is almost 300,000 more than the 2021 election, according to data from the Virginia Public Access Project.
New Yorkers should have plenty of time to cast their ballots before voting ends, but turnout is expected to be very high this year.
Virginia voters will make their choice for governor and attorney general on Tuesday, and all 100 seats in the House of Delegates are also on the ballot.
