MILAN (AP) — American athletes received an enthusiastic welcome at the opening ceremony for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, but the mood shifted when cameras briefly turned to Vice President JD Vance.

The 232 American athletes in Milan include veterans we may recognize from past Olympics, some of whom are among the best athletes in the history of their sport. There are some new faces mixed in as well — rookies who are ready to make a splash on the world's stage, and repeat Olympians who have come back hungry for their first podium finish.
While the 2026 Winter Olympics started Wednesday, the Opening Ceremony took place Friday in Italy. The U.S. flag bearers were speedskater Erin Jackson and bobsledder Frank Del Duca. Jackson, 33, is a three-time Olympian and the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the 500 meters.
