Davis Thompson capped a roller coaster of a back nine at Torrey Pines with a birdie to take the lead Friday in the Genesis Invitational. Scottie Scheffler had an unusually wild day off the tee and was right on his heels.

Scheffler’s bogey-free 67 was, per Justin Ray, just the seventh time in 40 years a golfer found five or fewer fairways at Torrey Pines South and shot that low. He hit at least three tee shots that missed so far they went behind the crowds and could enter the weekend playing the final group with leader Davis Thompson.

The world No. 1 is a ball-striking savant whose tee-to-green game has rivaled the best versions of Tiger Woods in recent years, but he found another gear the last two days at the relocated Genesis Invitational where that legendary swing took a back seat to a sublime short game.
