AUBURN, Ala. - After finishing out the season as Auburn's interim head coach, DJ Durkin will remain on Alex Golesh's staff, the university announced.
A disciple of Tennessee coach Josh Heupel, Golesh served as the Vols' offensive coordinator from 2021-2022 and, before that, as Central Florida's co-offensive coordinator in 2020 — Heupel's final year with the Knights. Golesh was also an assistant at Ohio State, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma State, Toledo, Illinois and Iowa State in his career.
Auburn has not had a winning season since Gus Malzahn's final year in 2020 when they went 6-5. Since then, the Tigers have gone 28-35 and have made it to two bowl games, losing both. This year the Tigers went 1-7 in conference play and finished tied for 13th with Mississippi State and South Carolina, with only Arkansas below them.
Auburn faces a concerning issue that could plague the Tigers later in the season.
One Auburn alumnus returned to the NFL on Tuesday, while two other former Tigers lost their roster spots in the league. The Arizona Cardinals signed linebacker Eku Leota for their practice squad, the Cleveland Browns released linebacker Eugene Asante from their practice squad and the New York Jets waived defensive tackle Byron Cowart from its injured reserve.
Following the Tigers' first loss of the season, head coach Larry Vickers and Auburn will travel north as they look to bounce back against Syracuse in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Wednesday evening.
