NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Monday that Detroit hired former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing for the position.
Will Dan Campbell continue calling plays? Will he make any staff changes? What will the Lions do with their pending free agents?
The Lions' season got off to a wobbly start with a double-digit loss in Green Bay, but Campbell's club turned things around, going 5-2 before a Week 8 bye. However, inconsistencies along the offensive line and defensive injuries led to a dismal stretch run, including three straight December losses that eliminated the Lions from the playoffs.
Running backs, linebackers get highest marks in Detroit Lions 9-8 season. I don’t think Dan Campbell is deserving of the “fricking F” he gave himself.
In his end-of-season press conference Monday, Campbell spoke openly about the bitter taste of falling short. The Lions missed the postseason at 9-8 after winning two playoff games in 2023 and going 15-2 a year ago. "Not good enough. We didn't get in. We underachieved," Campbell said. "So, not good. I'd give myself a freaking F."
The Detroit Lions ranked among the most injured teams in the NFL this season for the second straight year, but Lions coach Dan Campbell defended his team’s training staff in his end-of-season news conference Monday, Jan. 4, and chalked some of his team’s poor health up to bad luck.
Just a quick history lesson. Bill Belichick, who went on to become one of the all-time great head coaches, had a stint with the Lions (1976-1977). He initially worked as an assistant special teams coach and then as the wide receivers/tight ends coach the following year.
After consecutive playoff appearances, including the NFC title game in 2024, the Lions suffered through a miserable season when they lost both coordinators, who were signed as head coaches. The team also dealt with a laundry list of injuries to key players.
