Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday succeeded in a high-stakes House vote to pass President Donald Trump’s plan to fund the government into the fall, overcoming far-right opposition as the GOP scrambles to avert a government shutdown Friday at midnight.

The vote sets up a showdown in the Senate over a bill Democrats criticize as giving more power to President Trump and Elon Musk.

The measure now heads to the Senate where it’s uncertain if Democrats will provide the votes needed to avoid a lapse in government funding.

House Republicans will vote today on a stopgap funding bill, which will keep funding the government at current levels until September but will offer steep cuts that could upend several areas.

The House narrowly passed the budget, 217 to 213, sending it to the Senate. The measure keeps the government funded through the end of the federal fiscal year on Sept. 30. All 43 California Democrats voted no, while all nine Republicans voted yes.
