More than 100 firefighters are battling two blazes on the slopes of South Africa’s Table Mountain. National parks authorities said Wednesday they were starting to bring them under control after the fires threatened to move toward nearby Cape Town.

Firefighters have battled a blaze on the slopes in the national park for days. The fire spread overnight toward Cape Town’s central business district.

As wildfires rage across Table Mountain, Cape Town officials suspect arson and mobilise extensive firefighting resources to contain the blaze.

All available resources had been deployed to contain the fire, South African National Parks, which oversees the mountain and the surrounding reserve, said.

A massive fire continues to rage on Table Mountain, with firefighters battling challenging conditions in Newlands Ravine and Devil’s Peak. The fire already scorched 60 hectares of vegetation.
